For over two decades, a dedicated group in Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire, has been passionately practicing Judaism. Their journey began in 2000 with an exploration of the International Kabbalah Center, but under the guidance of Professor Yehuda Ahoua, they embraced the understanding that Kabbalah flourishes as part of a comprehensive Jewish practice. This shift sparked a deep commitment to learning Hebrew, engaging in tefillah, studying Jewish texts, and observing holidays. Their efforts reached a significant milestone in 2017 when the community underwent a formal Orthodox conversion through a beit din.

A Thriving Hub of Jewish Life
Côte d’Ivoire’s Jewish community has established itself as a center of learning and devotion in Abidjan. Their synagogue, a rented villa, serves as a space for regular Shabbat services, Hebrew classes, and holiday celebrations. Members have developed an impressive command of Hebrew and Jewish rituals, even challenging visiting guests with their knowledge of traditional melodies. The synagogue fosters a strong sense of belonging and serves as a spiritual home for both local members and visiting Jewish travelers.
Vision for the Future
Under the leadership of Prof. Yehuda Ahoua, the community has ambitious plans to expand its infrastructure. The cornerstone of this vision is a generous donation of land in the Grand Bassam area, just outside Abidjan. Plans include constructing a synagogue, mikveh, restaurant, Judaica shop, and residential housing to meet the community’s growing needs. This project reflects the community’s long-term commitment to building a vibrant and sustainable Jewish presence in Côte d’Ivoire.
Kulanu’s Impact
Kulanu’s support has been instrumental in the growth of Côte d’Ivoire’s Jewish community. They have donated a Torah scroll, assisted with the 2017 conversions, and provided educational resources, including Hebrew and prayer books. Kulanu has also sent Global Teaching Fellows to offer classes and guidance, further enriching the community’s Jewish knowledge. These efforts have strengthened the community’s connection to the global Jewish family and enabled them to practice Judaism with greater confidence and joy.
