Kenya

In 2000, a small group of Messianic Christians in the rural Kasuku village, located in Oljororok constituency in rural Kenya, decided to embrace Judaism after studying the Old Testament and discovering books on Judaism in Nairobi’s synagogue library. They built their first synagogue using tree trunks and plastic sheets on land owned by Abraham Ndungu Mbugua and Sarah Mumbi. Over the years, the community has grown significantly, with many converting to Judaism under Rabbi Gershom Sizomu of the Abayudaya, supported by a US Bet Din. Members have studied at Uganda’s yeshiva and abroad in Israel and the US. The community recently completed a synagogue, library, social hall, and kosher kitchen.

Interfaith Harmony

In Kasuku village, Jews, Christians, and Muslims live peacefully, sharing resources and fostering mutual respect. Young converts, some as young as six, often leave their families to join the Jewish community while maintaining positive ties with their parents, who support their children’s growth in a thriving and welcoming environment. This harmony allows the Jewish community to flourish while strengthening interfaith connections in the region.

Global Connections

The Kehillat Israel community has forged strong global ties through social media and their partnership with Kulanu since 2013. These connections bring visiting rabbis, volunteers, and resources for Jewish education while raising awareness about their unique story. Social media also enables them to link with Jews worldwide, enhancing their knowledge and strengthening their sense of belonging to the global Jewish family.

Vision for Growth

To secure their future, Kehillat Israel focuses on expanding access to Jewish education, hosting visiting rabbis, and developing sustainable agriculture projects. Children’s education is a priority, alongside initiatives like dairy farming and tourism to foster self-sufficiency. With continued global support, the community is determined to thrive while preserving its unique traditions and commitment to Judaism.
